Figure 8: Here's the schematic for a 3 element tester.  I used 1K ohm resistors, but lower values will allow you to see the resting current to the motors.
Figure 9: This in-line tester was built into an old RS232 breakout box.  It fits into a pocket easily.
Figure 10: I used the connectors and cables from the original breakout box and a piece of prototyping board.  This tester plugs into the controller and you can then plug the control cable into the tester to allow monitoring the motor leads with the antenna in operation.
